保险杠是汽车外部安全部件，可采有高密度整皮PU半硬泡制造，(密度1100kg/m3)，当车头遇到8km/h的正面冲击后，这类保险杠会弹回原样，保护了汽车的各种零部件不致损坏，如前灯、车门、引擎顶盖、燃料和冷却系统仍处于完好的工作状态。保险杠、挡泥板也可用玻纤增强聚氨酯泡沫塑料，这种加工称为增强反应注射成型(RRIM)。

而各类挡泥板由于制品较薄、形状变化复杂;并要有防泥浆石子碰击、耐冲击和在一40～160C°的工作可靠性等，制作难度较大。部分汽车挡泥板采用增强结构硬泡。汽车的内衬可以使用聚氨酯发泡机生产的热成型聚氨酯泡沫板。
